Applying to Tenants First Housing
Co-operative for a House

At Tenants First, we aim to make registering with us for a house as quick and easy as possible. Once you are on our system you will be able to put your name forward for any suitable vacancies as they occur. We allocate all our rented properties via Homehunt North East Scotland (NES). The following Q & A section below is a good guide to answering any queries you have. If you have any further questions you would like to ask or want to hear more before you decide to register, please contact us on 01224 628101

  • QWho/what is homehunt® NES NES?

Ahomehunt® NES stands for homehunt North East Scotland, an organisation that allocates affordable rented accommodation using the choice based lettings system.

  • QWhat is Choice Based Lettings and how do I apply for a house??

AAnyone over the age of 16 can apply for a house with Tenants First. All you need to do is fill out a short registration form and send this to us. We will register your application within 24 hours and contact you with your application number.

  • CBL is a different process of allocating properties. It does not have waiting lists, where you wait for the staff of Tenants First to contact you. Instead, we advertise our properties in the Press and Journal and on the Homehunt Website and you apply for them – giving you the choice of which property you want to apply for. We allocate our properties based to the applicant who makes best use of the house, and has the highest level of housing need. By best use, we mean someone who will use all of the bedrooms available but will not overcrowd or under-occupy the property. By housing need we mean the applicant who has the highest level of priority for the house on offer.

  • QHow do I apply for priority?

AIt is important to note that we take account of each applicant’s housing need. Priority will be given to those in the greatest housing need. If you feel that you would qualify for priority e.g. you are statutory homeless or have a medical condition that is significantly affected by where you currently live, you can apply for a priority pass. Once you have registered with homehunt NES we will send you out a Pack, which includes a Guide that will explain all about how to apply for priority (and other CBL info) and priority passes application forms. When we receive your completed priority pass forms they will be assessed. We will write to you to advise what priority (if any) you have been awarded.

  • QWill there be any age limitations ?

AThere are no age restrictions (other than applicants need to be over the age of 16) for the properties we allocate). However, some of the properties we own are designed for people who have particular needs, such as those who need support. Anyone applying for this type of accommodation, for example, sheltered housing is likely to have a medical and/or social need and will need to qualify for Housing Support to live there. Therefore, this type of accommodation is not available to every applicant.

  • QWhere else can I see available properties?

AProperties will be advertised every two weeks on www.homehunt.info, our own website, in the local press (Press & Journal Homes Pages), our own offices and on our phone line on 01224 628101.

  • QWhat happens if my bid is unsuccessful?

ABecause of the large volume of applicants bidding for properties we are unable to contact every person to advise they have been unsuccessful. If you do not hear from us you can apply for another property when properties are next advertised. It is also advisable to register with other landlords to increase any chances of being housed.
