It
is Britain’s largest Fully Mutual Housing Co-operative. Fully Mutual means it is
controlled by its members and so it is wholly tenant controlled only
members of the Co-op can be tenants. Membership of the Co-operative’s
Committee of Management and Sub Committees is made up mainly of tenant
members.
The
Committee of Management has overall responsibility for the management of
the Co-operative and operates at a strategic level. The Sub Committees
cover all areas of the Co-operative’s services and work at a more
operational level, looking at issues like performance and policy
development.
The
Co-operative’s properties are mostly “affordable” i.e. in the social
rented sector, although future developments will include properties which
are eligible to purchase under the Governments shared equity scheme.
With
assets of over £20 million, Tenants First Housing Co-operative is a very
substantial business. There are a total of 47 full time, part time and
job-share staff: most are based at our main Aberdeen office but there are
also staff based at our Peterhead office, and within the Sheltered Housing
Schemes.
The Co-op vision statement is ‘As
an innovative member controlled Co-operative; to provide quality,
affordable rented housing maintained to a high standard; to contribute to
the development and support of sustainable communities.’
